Rayleigh-Bénard PCR reactor Last Updated: 28 May 2011 People: K.N. Wei, Wei-Tsang Chiou,Hsin-Da Wu, M.J. Chern, C.K. Chan
We perform the DNA replicating polymerase chain reaction in a Rayleigh-Bénard convective flow including gold nanopartilces. DNA templates are transported along a circulatory flow which is caused by a temperature gradient and encounter different thermal environments. Consequently, DNA templates are replicated during a cycle. Results of the DNA replicating are analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis. It is found that gold nanoparticles enhance the efficiency of PCR in the Rayleigh-Bénard flow. The DNA replicating in the natural convective flow takes less time than a classical PCR. The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique is used to measure the natural convective flow field. Results obtained by PIV reveal that the natural convective flow structure is affected by gold nanoparticles.
